Phishing Security

July 6th, 2006

Phishing is getting a bigger and bigger problem. Many people don’t know exactly what it is but many have tried to get scammed and lost lots of money. I’ve made a few security tips you might be able to use.

According to Wikipedia.org phishing is “attempts to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy person or business in an apparently official electronic communication” and you need to take this threat very serious because it’s not going away. It’s actually getting worse month by month.

When you need to check your paypal account, your bank account or similar accounts be extremely careful about clicking links in mails. If you get an email telling you to update your paypal or bank info you should always type in the URL yourself and never click the link in the email. It’s better to be 110% sure that you’re on the right page than giving your login and password to a fake site that looks like the real site.

If you have to use your credit card online make sure you’re on a secure homepage. That address can be recognised by the way you write the address. A secure address should be “https://” and not the normal “http://”.

Always make sure your anti-virus program (like Norton, McAfee and Kaspersky) is updated. You would be surprised if you knew how many people surf without anti-virus programs. I have TWO programs to protect me and I STILL get virus every now and then. Imagine how your PC might be infected if you don’t use any anti-virus programs.
