Vista’s security features
May 8th, 2006As some of you might have seen in the media Microsoft has been working on the new Windows Vista (previously known as Longhorn) for quite some time. Windows XP (and Windows 98 for that matter) has been a bit of a nightmare to many surfers because of the many security flaws that has enabled hackers to install malicious software on our computers and gain access to personal info, change startup pages, pop windows while you surfer, ect.
Analyst Andrew Jaquith from Yankee Group expects Vista to significantly shrink the aftermarket for anti-spyware and desktop firewalls, simply because Microsoft has managed to come up with such a good piece of software that security won’t be much of an issue anymore. Yankee Group believes the number of critical security vulnerabilities that will hit users will be reduced by as much as 80 per cent and the impact of the remaining fraction significantly reduced. For us who has been fighting with Microsoft’s operation systems because of security flaws this almost sound too good to be true, and it almost is.
You see, Vista doesn’t come with all those fantastic features from birth. You have to pay for it. You first buy Vista and if you want the extra security you have to spend some extra cash on getting increased security. However, according to Analyst Andrew Jaquith, many users (like you and I) only need the normal security products from Microsoft, such as Windows Defender to avoid problems.
I’m not sure what I think about all this. The best thing would of course be to make bullet proof software. Microsoft is sitting on a huge market share and when you’re almost forced to buy their products to be able to run any kind of software I don’t fancy the fact that you first have to pay for the operation system and after that you have to pay for security to protect the operation system you just paid for.
